Ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson O'Neill has an impressive amount of peaks under her boots. She summited two 8,000 meter peaks in 24 hours, one including Mount Everest, and has skied all around the world. Through her journeys, she has also acquired a diverse set of navigation skills that help keep her safe on her backcountry expeditions.
In the video below by National Geographic, O’Neill runs through the gamut of navigation: from orienteering with a map and compass, to sun navigation, to using an app on your phone. Check out her tips and try practicing them in the field.
